Over the centuries, it can be agreed that technology has been one of the fastest-emerging and most continuously developing devices to be embedded in everyday life. To break things down, technology can be defined as the branch and application of knowledge that is used to create and produce goods or services through technical means as well as their interrelation with life, society and the environment. It encompasses the collection of techniques, skills, methods and processes for practical ends.
The concept of Digital Technologies incorporates the use of electronic tools, systems and devices to generate, process and store data. Examples of this include social media, online games and applications, multimedia, cloud computing and mobile devices. (Teaching with Digital Technologies, 2017). Communication technologies refers to all the media, multimedia, equipment and other devices used to process and communicate information, in example emails, using mobile phones for SMS and calling and social media. In a recent Sydney Morning Herald article, the role of teaching was described as “becoming more complex” and that educators “need to think of how best to use their expertise to help kids make sense of all the information they can get anywhere”, and to “make that information meaningful to them so it becomes knowledge.” (Prof Jan Van Driel, 2016). I believe this is vitally important as, being a Primary Educator myself, one of my main goals is to observe and understand how students incorporate technology to their learning. Teaching is a constantly evolving process and experimenting with different and emerging technologies provides a great opportunity to integrate them into my classroom and develop techniques to more effectively engage my students. In addition, Prof Jan Van Driel also states in the article that he “believes technology will help teachers keep track of each student’s progress”, which I agree is important. Enjoyed reading your first blog kristyna! Some interesting points made in regards to the importance of technologies and communication. An example that I found convincing was the development of technology such as iPhone and emails.
